THE JEW İN AKHİSAR (MANİSA/TURKEY): OR YEHUDA AGRICULTURAL SCHOOL

In this study, agriculture schools constructed in Anatolia and Thracia by the Jewish community - one of the most significant among the minorities within Ottoman Empire -  are examined. Or Yehuda Agriculture School which is located in Kayalıoğlu town in Akhisar district within Manisa province is particularly handled, which is one of the few agriculture schools that are established within this scope and achieved to remain till today.

The migration of Sefarad Jews from Western Europe to Ottoman territories and also the social and economic conditions of Jewish community during first quarter of XX. Century are examined, therefore the motives for establishing their own schools are determined. In this respect Alliance Israel Universelle (A.I.U) Institution - which is the most influential on establishing Jewish schools in Ottoman territories - and the schools established by this institution are examined.

Tthe Agriculture Schools that are established by the initiatives of Alliance (A.I.U.) Institute in Anatolia and Thracia and also the State Agriculture Schools that are established in the same century within the policy of developing national agriculture are examined. A comparasion between the State Agriculture Schools and the Jewish Agriculture Colonies is carried out.

There are six Jewish Agriculture Colonies known in Anatolia and Thracia:

This bulding predicet Jewish Colonie  is located in rural area of Eskişehir.

Immediate surroundings of Or Yehuda Agriculture School which is constructed at the beginning of XX. Century are inspected. Material and structural properties are determined and current conditions of the structure are indicated as a result of preparation of architectural plan with the measurements and observations made in the structure.

Maintenance problems of Or Yehuda Agriculture School are determined, therefore restutition and restoration recommendations intended for the maintainability of the structure are brought forward. In this context, structural and regulational problems that are complicating the maintenance of the school are exposed.
